At Gin Gin State High School, we recognise the importance and necessity to equip students with the skills to be competent, safe users of technology and to enhance their learning experiences through student centred learning, critical and creative thinking and virtual learning environments.

Our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) laptop program is about to enter its sixth year and continues to gain momentum. All students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 in 2021 are required to have a BYO or hire laptop.  Students in Year’s 11 and 12 are also strongly encouraged to participate in our BYO laptop program to enhance their learning at school and at home but it is not a requirement.

BYOD Connection Process

  1. Acquire Device (according to minimum specifications.)
  2. Download and read the BYOD Student Charter from the school website.
  3. Follow the steps in the video below to connect the device at home.

Bring device to school daily for use in class.

Device selection

To ensure the best experience for students participating in the BYOD program, we have decided on a set of minimum device specifications. Before acquiring a laptop to use at school please refer to the Minimum BYOD Device Specifications Fact Sheet

Please note:
  • iPads and other tablets will not suffice. Surface RT, Windows 7, 8, 10 in S-Mode, Linux, Google Chromebook and Android Operating Systems are NOT SUPPORTED Operating Systems. Click here for instructions on how to switch out of Windows 10 S-Mode.
  • No Mobile Phones are allowed on the BYO network.
  • Students are entitled to connect up to 3 devices to the BYO network.
  • Devices that have 64GB or less hard drive space do not have the necessary storage for required software and OneNote Notebook synchronisation.
  • Devices that have an Intel Atom or Intel Celeron Processor have performance limitations which will impact on the student's learning experience and software capabilities.

Purchasing a BYO Device

As a service we provide parents with access to laptop portals to assist in the purchase of suitable, quality devices at the best price.  The vendor portals include a variety of brands and a range of price points.

All devices purchased through the vendor portals will be able to connect to the school network. However, some devices will provide better performance than others and devices purchased independently may not be able to connect.

The portal laptops have been carefully selected to meet the following criteria:
  • Durability - devices built for education with strength and reliable battery life (these are not available in retail stores)
  • Warranty and Protection - warranty and insurances that are not available to the retail market
  • Compatibility - operating systems that are compatible with the school's managed network
  • Price - educational pricing, payment plans and interest free options
Please note the school does not endorse any one supplier, parents can choose to purchase from where ever they desire (online or in-store).

Vendor Portals

To purchase via one of the vendor portals, please select the vendor of your choice by clicking on the vendor name to the right under 'Purchasing Portals' (note, the school does not endorse any one supplier and order is not indicative of preferred supplier status). All devices on these portals are supported on the Gin Gin SHS network.
